It is unknown how quantum and classical mechanics relate to each other, but new research with piezoelectric crystals, published in Nature (1 July 2010), has shown that quantum behaviour can have a significant effect on classical behaviour. The scientists didn't start out to show this – they were trying to measure fast changes in charge at nanometer scales.
